The difference is much larger when BMW is compared with Toyota.

The gap holds up on the other measures, too. RepairPal puts Toyota at $441 a year against BMW's $968, with 0.3 unscheduled shop visits a year against 0.9. CarEdge gives a Toyota a 14.97% chance of a repair over $500 in its first decade, against 47.26% for a BMW.

Part of that comes from the type of cars each brand sells. BMW uses more luxury and performance equipment. Toyota builds many models around lower running costs and simpler repairs.

One point runs the other way, and it surprises people. BMW includes more scheduled maintenance with a new car than Toyota does. BMW Ultimate Care runs for three years or 36,000 miles. 

For many model-year 2026 and older Toyota vehicles, ToyotaCare covers normal factory-scheduled maintenance for two years or 25,000 miles. For many model-year 2027 vehicles, the standard term is one year or 10,000 miles, whichever comes first. Toyota lists longer terms for certain electric models and the Mirai. 

The German premium shows up after the included coverage ends, not during it.

Is a BMW Maintenance Plan Cost Worth It?

Before paying for extra coverage, check what is already included with the car.

Eligible new 2026 BMW models come with BMW Ultimate Care. The plan covers certain scheduled services for three years or 36,000 miles.

BMW's maintenance booklet describes what that includes: engine oil and filter, brake fluid, vehicle checks, and the items that are carried out alongside an oil service, all prompted by the Condition Based Service system rather than a fixed mileage. Roadside assistance runs separately for four years and unlimited miles, 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.
